I’m Dreaming of a Write Christmas!
Yes, the title of this blog is cheesy. No, I won’t apologise for it. Yes, I inherited my sense of humour from my Dad. No, I won’t be paying him commission. This week’s blog is a short and sweet one, as I celebrate the successes of my first six months of business, and look forward to what the new year will bring.
2025: the year of finding my feet (and not faceplanting!)
I had never thought of running a small business before June 2025. Being my own boss? Scary! Marketing myself and my services? I’m an A+ rambler! Invoices? My nightmare!
I am most definitely not a natural marketer, or a numbers person, and in fact I frequently embarrass myself trying to prove to others I know how to do even the most basic of mathematical exercises without relying on my phone’s calculator. However, it turns out I am good at running an editorial consultancy, even with chronic fatigue syndrome!
Here are some of my successes I am most proud of:
I rebranded my business to include my name, and specified my services to a genre I know, love, have researched academically for years, write in, read in, edit in and dream about – fantasy fiction.
I have worked with a wonderful client in the US via a publishing house on their debut urban fantasy novel (and received some very kind feedback).
I have worked with a fantastic debut author here in the UK on their fantasy novel with a fascinating magic system (you know who you are! You are simply fab!)
I am currently working on a multi-POV, complex fantasy novel that has given me opportunities to challenge my editorial expertise and strengthen my skills.
I have secured myself a stall at THE London Book Fair so I can meet other agents, editors, publishers, authors and researchers.
I did all this while managing chronic fatigue, championing and growing my business without putting my health at risk.
So, what’s coming next?
2026 is going to be an AMAZING year. I can feel it in my bones! I have so many incredible things in the pipeline to expand my profile, share my unique editorial approach, highlight the benefits of my bespoke templates, and help other fantasy authors to elevate their manuscripts.
With London Book Fair in March, I am full-steam ahead on prepping for that, but most of my time is being spent on my clients, who have entrusted me with their beloved manuscripts. I have a political fantasy I’ll be working on into the new year (with seven POVs and fifty chapters!); I will be finishing up an urban fantasy for a US client; and I will continue talks with new clients about their novels (all of which have fascinating magic systems!).
So, 2026 is already shaping up nicely.
Oh! I also now have a wedding to plan as I got ENGAGED at the weekend! I know! I’m 34 and I still feel too young to be doing something so mature! If any of you are wondering, I am actively working some fantasy fiction elements into the ceremony or reception in some way, shape or form! If you have any ideas, send them my way!
Signing off for the holidays…
To end the year the way I started, I want to say thank you to everyone who has followed me as I started my consultancy journey, and especially to my fiancé (gosh, how grown up does that sound!) and my cute editorial assistant/golden retriever, Rufus. For now, I’m going to enjoy my time away from my desk, bask in my recently engaged happy glow, and focus on finishing the draft of my new novel!
