My mission: to take the pain out of editing
Hello! Welcome to Ivatt Editorial – an editing consultancy with a unique twist that aims to take the pain out of editing for fantasy authors, literary agents, and publishing professionals.
How can I do this, I hear you ask?
Simple. I’ve taken my professional and academic backgrounds in editing and change management to create a method for editing that aims to reduce the number of revision stages in developmental editing, and that prioritises:
Characters: making sure that they are realistic, engaging, relatable, and that their arcs follow logical paths considering the circumstances of their past, the situation of their present, and the destination of their future. It’s about applying change management methodologies to ensure that psychology, personality and emotions are all taken into account, making your characters real people.
Impacts of editorial changes: we all know how it goes - you make one change and then a long line of further changes topple like dominos! My unique service is all about identifying those impacts, mapping them with my change management tools, and providing a roadmap so that we reduce the likelihood of more impacts being found later in the editing process (sometimes they’re not found until the book itself is published!)
Magic systems: oof, a big one for the genre (and one of my personal favourites). I have used my Masters by Research to separate the magic systems from a manuscript, to ensure that the foundations are solid with all possible questions answered, and to make sure that your magical elements are logical, entertaining and follow the rules you’ve set down for them.
Ultimately, I’m a huge nerd for fantasy fiction and I want to help make good books great! I’m heading off to the World Fantasy Convention next week and can’t wait to tell you all about it!
